André Carson
CONGRESSMAN
Representative André Carson can be found on his website and twitter.
André Carson is the congressional representative for the 7th district of Indiana, which represents most of Marion county and Indianapolis.
Carson has been a member of Congress since the 2008 special election. He is a member of the Democratic party. His voting record is consistent with the Democratic party platform, having supported health care reform, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, and the stimulus package among other things.
The congressman's position on foreign affairs and homeland security is unsurprising when viewed in the context of his voting record and political persuasion. Most statements on his website support the decisions of the Obama administration in ending the Iraq war and combating drug violence on the United States border.
Notably, however, Carson dissents regarding the remaining presence of United States armed forces in Afghanistan. On his website, he says:
"With the end of our engagement in Iraq, I will advocate strongly for an
extended rest period and not just redeploying [soldiers] quickly to
Afghanistan....having a US presence in Afghanistan may be necessary
in the coming years, but we cannot allow this to be used as a
justification for keeping American service members in Afghanistan
indefinitely, as we have seen in South Korea." --André Carson
Mr. Carson has remained largely mute on issues regarding his religion. However, at an Islamic Circle of North America convention, he said that the United States should use madrassas, islamic religious schools, as a model and that educational ingenuity and innovation will not be achieved otherwise, a statement that garnered some controversy.
