Khalilzad has demonstrated interest in getting involved in Afghan politics. He claims to have been intent on running for presidency in the summer of 2009, but was unable to file on time for the elections. Since then has been seeking to other high positions in the executive branch. Khalilzad attaining any high positions in Afghan is problematic for Afghanistan because as a former American diplomat, he may have reasons to cater to US wishes over those of Afghanistan.
