The Future of Muslim-Americans in Politics
Many great Muslim-American politicians, such as those discussed in-depth on this site, have already broke ground and done revolutionary work. However there is still room for growth and more presence of Muslims in the political field, and it can be expected that in the future, Muslims will be more thoroughly represented in government.
As the Muslim population expands in the United States, it can be expected that the presence of Muslim politicians will continue to grow as well. Currently, it is being predicted that the Muslim population in the United States will double within twenty years, going from 2.6 million in 2010 to 6.2 million in 2030. The 112th congress reported two Muslim politicians (Keith Ellison and Andre Carson), making Muslims 0.4% of Congress in a year where they made up 0.6% of the population. Assuming that such trends remain about the same, it can be calculated that in 2030, when Muslims are expected to make 1.7% of the population in the United States, Congress will follow suit and have approximately six to ten Muslim members serving in that session.
